About Department
The Department of English, one of the most prestigious Departments in Santipur College set out its journey with the introduction of the Honours course in English in the academic session 2004-2005 on a self-financing basis. Since then the Department has been tireless in its endeavour in imparting curiosity-driven, quality education across various strata in the entire surrounding. The department has remained committed to the purposes of fostering academic interest and innovative outlook towards broader perspectives of learning in particular and life in general. The Department has, over the years, earned coveted prestige in translating itself into a vibrant place of intellectual activities with lectures, seminars, trans-disciplinary workshops, academic presentations, film-shows and theatre performances. Special lectures and talks on relevant areas of literary and cinematic discourses are arranged on a regular basis in order to introduce the students with the contemporary literary scene. The Department has been organizing a number of interactive seminars and workshops on different themes and issues since 2015.
The Department undertakes a wide range of academic and co-curricular activities to enrich student learning and intellectual growth. Regular tutorial classes are conducted in a structured manner to enhance understanding and critical acumen, while remedial classes are incorporated into the routine to support students from underprivileged sections.
Monthly special lectures by eminent scholars and doctoral fellows provide exposure to diverse themes related to the UG syllabus, complemented by the annual students' seminar that fosters scholarly exchange with participants from other colleges and universities. Creative engagement is encouraged through poster presentations during seminars and conferences, as well as the departmental wall magazine, which serves as a vibrant platform for students' creativity, intellectual insights, and speculative thought. Guardians' meets, held twice a year, ensure meaningful interaction between faculty and parents through shared concerns and suggestions. At regular intervals, state- and national-level seminars and conferences are organized with distinguished scholars delivering public talks. As part of the curriculum, students actively participate in text-based drama performances, while audio-visual classes familiarize them with technology-assisted learning through screenings of contemporary and cult films. The Department also ensures access to e-journals to acquaint students with recent developments in research and critical inquiry, and interdisciplinary workshops are regularly held to encourage thinking beyond disciplinary boundaries. Exchange programmes with neighbouring colleges and universities further enrich students' academic exposure and cultural understanding. Finally, consistent assignments and assessments are integrated within the NEP/CBCS framework, with topical discussions arranged for students' improvement and academic progress.
At present the Department has two full-time teachers, Dr. Anirban Bhattacharjee (Head) and Dr. Amrita Chakraborty (Convener); and four SACTs, Sri Sanjoy Debnath, Sri Ayan Kr. Khan, Sri Subhankar Ghosh and Smt. Sumana Ghosh.
