History of Santipur College

Santipur College, located in the historic town of Santipur in the Nadia district of West Bengal, was established on 22 July, 1948, just one year after India gained independence, under the visionary leadership of Pandit Lakshmi Kanta Moitra, an eminent scholar, lawyer, parliamentarian, and a distinguished member of the Constituent Assembly of India. The college started its functioning at the Kharjala Garden House of Mr. Atal Bihari Moitra.

The college now stands as a beacon of learning, culture, and empowerment in the region, deeply rooted in the values of freedom, intellectual growth, and social responsibility.

Founding Vision

A firm believer in the power of education to transform lives, Pandit Moitra envisioned an institution that would bring higher education within the reach of the common people of Santipur and its surrounding rural areas.

At a time when educational opportunities were scarce outside metropolitan cities, his dream was both bold and necessary. With unwavering commitment, he mobilized support from like-minded citizens and intellectuals to lay the foundation of this college.

Growth and Academic Development

Starting as an affiliated undergraduate college under the University of Calcutta, Santipur College began its journey by offering courses in the arts and humanities. Over the decades, it expanded its academic horizon to include science and commerce streams. Eventually, the college came under the affiliation of the University of Kalyani in 2000, aligning itself with modern curricula and academic reforms.

Santipur College is recognized by the UGC under section 2(f) & 12(B) and has been assessed and accredited by NAAC successfully in 2007 and 2021.

The institution also became a study centre of Netaji Subhas Open University (NSOU) since 2004, and a Learner Support Center under the Directorate of Open and Distance Learning, University of Kalyani since 2016, thereby extending its reach to non-traditional learners, including working individuals, dropout students, and those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Cultural and Regional Significance

Santipur, known for its rich traditions of handloom weaving, Sanskrit learning, and Vaishnavite culture, found in the college a natural extension of its intellectual heritage. The college became not just a center of academics, but a hub of cultural and social discourse.

শান্তিপুর কলেজের ইতিহাস

পশ্চিমবঙ্গের নদিয়া জেলার ঐতিহাসিক শহর শান্তিপুরে অবস্থিত শান্তিপুর কলেজ প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয় ১৯৪৮ সালের ২২শে জুলাই, স্বাধীনতার ঠিক এক বছর পর। এর প্রতিষ্ঠাতা ছিলেন পণ্ডিত লক্ষ্মীকান্ত মৈত্র-একজন বিশিষ্ট পণ্ডিত, আইনজীবী, সাংসদ এবং ভারতীয় সংবিধান সভার সদস্য। কলেজের সূচনালগ্নে পাঠদান শুরু হয় মি. অতলবিহারী মৈত্রের খরজলা বাগানবাড়িতে।

প্রতিষ্ঠার লক্ষ্য

পণ্ডিত মৈত্র মনে করতেন, শিক্ষা মানুষের জীবন বদলাতে পারে। শান্তিপুর এবং আশেপাশের গ্রামের সাধারণ মানুষের কাছে উচ্চশিক্ষা পৌঁছে দেওয়াই ছিল তাঁর প্রধান উদ্দেশ্য। মহানগর ছাড়া শিক্ষার সুযোগ তখন ছিল খুবই সীমিত। সেই সীমাবদ্ধতাকে অতিক্রম করতেই তিনি কলেজ প্রতিষ্ঠার উদ্যোগ নেন এবং সমাজের নানা স্তরের মানুষের সহযোগিতা নিয়ে এ প্রতিষ্ঠান গড়ে তোলেন।

শিক্ষার প্রসার ও অগ্রগতি

প্রথমে কলেজটি কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অধীনে শুধু কলা বিভাগে পাঠদান শুরু করে। পরে বিজ্ঞান ও বাণিজ্য বিভাগ যুক্ত হয়। ২০০০ সাল থেকে এটি কল্যাণী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অন্তর্ভুক্ত হয়। কলেজটি UGC-এর ২(এফ) ও ১২ (বি) ধারা অনুসারে স্বীকৃত এবং ২০০৭ ও ২০২১ সালে NAAC-এর মূল্যায়ন লাভ করেছে।

২০০৪ সাল থেকে এটি নেতাজি সুভাষ মুক্ত বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের একটি স্টাডি সেন্টার হিসেবে এবং ২০১৬ সাল থেকে কল্যাণী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উন্মুক্ত ও দূরশিক্ষা বিভাগের সহায়তা কেন্দ্র হিসেবে কাজ করে চলেছে। এর ফলে কর্মজীবী, ড্রপআউট ও সুবিধাবঞ্চিত শিক্ষার্থীরাও শিক্ষার সুযোগ পেয়েছে।

সংস্কৃতি ও পরিচয়

তাঁত শিল্প, সংস্কৃত শিক্ষা ও বৈষ্ণব সংস্কৃতির জন্য খ্যাত শান্তিপুরের আত্মিক বৈশিষ্ট্য এই কলেজে প্রতিফলিত হয়েছে। এটি শুধু শিক্ষার কেন্দ্র নয়, বরং একটি সাংস্কৃতিক ও সামাজিক আলোচনার ক্ষেত্র হয়ে উঠেছে।

আজ ও আগামী

আজ শান্তিপুর কলেজ একটি প্রতিষ্ঠিত উচ্চশিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠান, যেখানে রয়েছে নিবেদিত শিক্ষকবৃন্দ, আধুনিক পরিকাঠামো ও অন্তর্ভুক্তিমূলক শিক্ষাদর্শন।

NAAC স্বীকৃতি, NSS ও NCC কার্যক্রম, গবেষণা ও সম্প্রসারণমূলক প্রকল্পের মাধ্যমে কলেজটি সমসাময়িক সমাজের প্রয়োজনের সঙ্গে নিজেকে যুক্ত রেখে এগিয়ে চলেছে। কলেজ গর্ব করে তার অতীতকে স্মরণ করে এবং ভবিষ্যতের দিকে এগিয়ে যায় উদ্ভাবন, সমতা ও উৎকর্ষের লক্ষ্য নিয়ে।
